Statement of Intent

Statement of Intent:

How do you intend to use the four areas of media theoretical framework to communicate meaning and meet the requirements of your chosen brief?

Statement of Intent - Magazine

My brief is to produce front covers and contents pages for the first two publications of a film magazine and two pages for the website of the magazine. Spotlight Magazine will target a wide audience of film lovers focused on 16-25 year olds as stated in the brief. Through my research I have found that film magazines don't seem to have a gendered target audience and my product will reflect that.

From my research into existing film magazines, I have found that they tend to feature a single film on the front with either the film poster or a photo of one of the actors and additional films or exclusives with cover lines that lead into other articles within the magazine. The contents pages feature stills from various movies and page numbers for the most intriguing articles. I will follow these conventions in my magazine, focusing the front cover on a single film idea and staging stills of varying styles and genre for the contents page. In order to attract my target audience, I will use people of the same age in the images for the front covers. The brief states that at least two social groups should be represented in the magazines, and I have chosen to represent a broad range as the ideologies associated with the target demographic of young people are often inclusive and progressive. As such, one of my front covers will include a lesbian couple promoting a romance film and the other features a trans-man as the main character.

Statement of Intent - Website

My website will follow a similar design to the magazine to be easily identifiable to readers. Most film magazine websites include the magazines masthead on the website, and I will follow this convention on my website. The masthead will be the same and it will use a similar colour scheme in order to connect the magazine and website. The website will also contain advertisements targeted towards 16-25 year olds. From my research into film websites, I have noticed that they represent a broad range of genres on their homepage to encourage a wider audience and so I have decided to do the same. The brief also states that the website should contain an audio/audiovisual piece which, through my research i have discovered that many film magazines/websites also host a podcast covering similar topics and I have decided to do this for my website. I will create a clip from the podcast to feature on my website that consists of an interview between the host and and actress from one of the films being promoted in my front covers which will allow me to promote the magazine through the website and link the two.

How do you intent to link your media products to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the digitally convergent nature of your media production?

As well as linking the audio piece to one of my front covers, I will also make the project digitally convergent by encouraging the readers to refer to the website on the magazines by promoting exclusive content on the website and have adverts on the website promoting the subscription for the magazine.
